Greetings to my Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

A few weeks ago I invited you to particularly notice places in your daily lives where you were aware of God’s presence; and then to write them on a post it and put it on the board by the door into the narthex. It is a blessing for me to read the notes that are posted there:

  • Seeing a rainbow

  • The community meal

  • A beautiful sunset over the lake

  • God’s presence and protection during a dangerous excursion on the lake

  • Seeing God in others

  • Help given from a stranger

  • Seeing a sermon illustration in action

  • Welcome received as a newcomer

  • A group in which I can share my life and faith

  • A good neighbor

  • Life itself is a journey in the presence of God

  • Seeing God in the beautiful area in which we live

  • In our children – no matter how old

  • In the joy of multiple generations of family interacting

  • A few very artistic drawings – including a happy pumpkin

As I look at the posting of the “God Moments” in our congregation and my heart is filled with joy and thanksgiving. God is so good to us! In the Autumn month of November Thanksgiving seems to swell until we celebrate as a nation in Thanksgiving to our God.

Several years ago our family was invited to dinner at a colleague’s home. It was a Friday and their family had a custom that at every Friday evening throughout the year, every person eating at the dinner table was invited to write on a small piece of paper something for which they were thankful that day. These notes would all be put, unread, into a large vase which they kept on a bookshelf in the dining room. On Thanksgiving Day, they would empty the vase, and at four or five set times during the day, they would read all these things for which thanks had been given, until they had read them all. For them, Thanksgiving Day was truly a gathering of gratitude from the entire year.

Beginning this week, I am going to collect a thanksgiving from each day in a jar, and read them on Thanksgiving Day.

“Praise the Lord!

Let my whole being praise the Lord!

I will praise the Lord with all my life;

I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.” (Psalm 146:1-2)

With Thanksgiving in my heart, Shalom to you, Pastor Jo Dene
